Easter in San Pedro

In the Philippines, every year on Easter, thousands of Christian devotees flaggelate their backs to reinact Jesus’ suffering and purify themselves from their sins. In no place more though than San Pedro, Pampanga where some go so far as to have themselves actually nailed to crosses. In 2007, 14 sinners were cruxified.

After their backs are cut with a paddle with sharp blades attached to it, the devotees whip themselves with little bamboo sticks attached to a rope and thereby spreading their blood all over themselves and everwhere around them. A major health crises broke out this year after it was discovered that one of those guys died of rabies a few days after the ceremony.
